On the first day of the bootcamp, we invite everyone into our office in Kentish Town – it’s an opportunity to pick up your laptop, say hello to the other learners and meet your trainers. We help you to get your laptops set up so that the rest of the course (which takes place mostly online) can get off to a good start. The first day is very relaxed with lots of time for introductions and questions. We know it can be a big step choosing to switch careers or come back to work after a career break, so we’re here to give you all the help and support you need!
For training, we use a platform called Discord. Your trainers will be available and online with you every day between 10am and 4pm, so they’ll always be on hand to help out when you get stuck. Most days start with a short introduction talk to set out the new topics and ideas, and the rest of the day is given over to practice! You will be set tasks or challenges to try and solve, and you’ll be partnered with another member of the group to work on the task together, allowing you to learn to ‘pair’. As everything is live and you’re working with other members of the group we ask you to be online every day between 10am and 4pm. Typically most people also take another hour or two each day for self study to make sure they understand everything that’s been introduced and go over things. However, we don’t generally suggest any more time than this is spent each day as your brain can only take in so much!
We have additional days in-person, spread out across the 12 week bootcamp. These typically are at the beginning of week 5 and week 10 (the first days of the two group projects), and the very last day (exact dates would of course be confirmed for you well in advance). If any members of the group are interested we also can set up additional, optional, in person days so you can continue to work face to face.
Towards the end of the training period and in the first few weeks immediately after we will be putting you up for interview with our hiring partners. It can take a little bit of time to get interviews set up and offers confirmed, so it may take several weeks after the end of training for your start date.We suggest that you keep practicing in your own time so you don’t forget anything you’ve just learnt! We suggest some projects you could try in your own time, or otherwise you could also do a project of your own that interests you. As long as you keep on coding! We’ll stay in regular touch during this period so you’ll have lots of updates and information about what’s going on.
The exact details of your job will naturally vary depending on the company you are placed with, but your first days and weeks will typically be lots of introductions and learning about the company. Your 12 weeks of training will have given you a thorough grounding in everything you need to know, so you can start off your new career on a strong footing. You can take a look at our blog to read about our success stories here. And we’ll keep in touch, we’ll check in regularly to make sure everything is going well!
